Solid Military Sci-Fi September 11, 2008 CFH (Blue Ridge Summit, PA USA) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
"Orphanage" is a first rate military Sci-Fi novel! Other reviews have already made the comparison to Heinlein, which is very good company for Buettner.
The story follows a very human Jason Wander (with faults and all) on an adventure that will determining the fate of the human race. The supporting characters are a little one dimensional, but Buettner does a good job with ones that count. I really enjoyed the almost clueless way our unlikely hero blunders from scene to scene, but occasionally found the plot device "coincidences" to detract a little from the story.
A very good and enjoyable book! I am already reading the sequel Orphan's Destiny (Jason Wander) and have ordered the third book Orphan's Journey (Jason Wander).
Highly recommended for military and "old school" Sci-fi fans!
one of the best... July 9, 2008 Davey 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
This is probably one of the best military sci-fi novels I have ever read, right up there with The Forever War and Starship Troopers. It's not often you get a chance to read a good sci-fi novel with plenty of adrenaline, character devlopment, and, most importantly, humor. Bravo, Robert Buettner, your book is terrific.
Loved it! July 7, 2008 Dogs&Horses (Texas) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
Normally I cringe away from military based Sci-Fi and I bought this one for my husband's reading pleasure. However, I got caught up in it, ended up loving it and have started the second book in the series this week. The only complaint I had was the lack of real detail about the loss of the cities and subsequent new reality for the survivors on Earth. However, that may well be dealt with in the sequels later on. And I do concede that this book was really about the soldiers and the battle off Earth and not so much about Earth's population or suffering.
Good solid fun - hard to put down May 14, 2008 John Martin (Diamond Bar, CA USA) 8 out of 8 found this review helpful
Well written with great characters. I really enjoyed this book. It just captured my imagination and had me immediately ordering the next two in the series. I like the style, the humor, and the creativity. I do agree that it captured the essence of why our warfighters fight and the bond between them. Well done.
The Next Starship Troopers May 12, 2008 Travis Starnes (Houston, Texas USA) 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
A solid sci-fi book, that while it does have issues, I really enjoyed. This book strongly reminds me of Starship Troopers (the book, not the junk movie), from the bombing of cities to a kid and his friends going off to war and growing up.
The main character, while a little stubborn and obstinate, is still likable and you definitely want him to win. The side characters are also very interesting for the most part. This book doesn't suffer from the hyper-competent characters that other "trash" sci-fi books do. Each definitely has flaws they have to work around.
Also, if you don't like meeting characters just to see them die, you won't like this book. It racks up quite a body count.
A good and refreshing sci-fi read.
