Product Description
The nanotechnology was designed to fight cancer. Instead, it evolved into the Machine Plague, killing nearly five billion people and changing life on Earth forever.

The nanotech has one weakness: it self-destructs at altitudes above ten thousand feet. Those few who've managed to escape the plague struggle to stay alive on the highest mountains, but time is running out-there is famine and war, and the environment is crashing worldwide. Humanity's last hope lies with a top nanotech researcher aboard the International Space Station-and with a small group of survivors in California who risk a daring journey below the death line...

5 out of 5 stars An outstanding novel...   October 24, 2008

The plot of this book is fresh and innovative. The characters are very well-written. Carlson has written not just an adventure yarn, but a smart story that is challenging and plausible. Read the book, then listen to Recorded Books' version with Richard Ferrone narrating...brilliant!

Without 24 this season, I've been craving action. Plague Year delivered. For me it was a gripping story and didn't have any labored or unnecessary scenes. The writing style was neither too flowery nor too choppy. I think Cam's character was almost comforting, like Jack, strong and steady. He provided the needed weight to balance out Ruth's rockiness. She was a bit annoying in parts. I think this book proves it's possible to write a nanotech-gone-wrong themed book that doesn't end up sounding like it's preaching bio-Luddite fanaticism. I'm looking forward to the sequel.

A fast read... a real page turner! You can't put it down because you simply can't predict what is going to happen next.

This book is very chilling because we already live in a time where we can't really keep track of all the new technology that we're presented with. Science is propelled forward with such leaps and bounds that I have this nagging fear that somehow some experiment is going to get out of control and wreak havoc. Welcome to Plague Year.

Jeff Carlson starts you off with a close-up view of a very small group of survivors of the nano plague. Don't be put off with how gruesome the story begins - you need to be thrown right into the horror or you won't understand how terrible and desperate the survivors have become. And things can get worse, so brace yourself.
The author does not define his characters into perfect cardboard cutouts of good or bad people. Instead, the characters are defined by the actual qualities of people in crisis: sometimes they strive to do the right thing and sometimes they will do anything they can to survive. Most often, they do both good and bad. Carlson's characters are very real.
The science is also very realistic but not so heavy that you feel like you are reading someone's textbook. There is a very good balance between the science and the fiction.
I recommend this book and I am so looking forward to the next book in this series!

I bought this book for the concept alone. Having a nanoplague that takes over the planet everywhere below 10,000 feet--yeah, I'll buy that. The thought of having our nation's capital move to Leadville, CO--those ideas were just too good to pass up.

Too bad the writing style was choppy and hard to follow. I really, really wanted to like this book. I just lost interest by the midway point and never regained it.

I picked up a copy of "Plague Year" as I was in Barnes and Noble in a rush to the hospital- my fiancee was hospitalized at 27 weeks pregnant because she was leaking amniotic fluid, and we were told she would be there for as long as it took for the baby to come. Yikes! So I grabbed a handful of books for her and I to keep ourselves occupied. I saw "Plague Year" as I scanned the shelf and the premise was deeply intriguing; I snapped it up.

Settling into the hospital room, I promised myself I would ration by reading so that it would last me as long as possible. On a whim, I read your book first. I think it was about an hour and a half later when the space shuttle was landing in Leadville I decided "Pfft. Screw that." I have a voracious appetite for reading, and I could not put your book down until I was done.

Well written and executed, a very compelling story! I'm eagerly awaiting the sequel. I find myself occasionally day dreaming about the premise of the plot and what I could have done differently put in the shoes of various characters, trying to "wargame" my way through the scenarios and plot points you created. Just like what review "emzbox" said; this book gets into your head, man! Enough so I emailed Mr. Carlson to ask him about a few of the details (and he was nice enough to take time out of his busy schedule to discuss them with me).

All in all, a great story. Buy it!
