Product Description Imagine a world without gender roles-and even without gender itself. This is the emerging reality in the world of the early 2040s.Harris, a talented but despondent software engineer, spends his free time chasing the latest rage in consciousness-expansion, usually a mixture of cyberpharmaceutical products and outrageous public spectacles. His mundane life takes an unexpected turn when he lands a high position at the BrainHost company, located at the pinnacle of world culture, the CityTech urban agglomeration. Harris discovers that in CityTech, romance is being replaced by the "coital matrix," where every stage of the process is preplanned and engineered. Meanwhile, BrainHost and others are experimenting with the implantation of male and female sexual organs inside the body of a single person, while eliminating all traces of gender. This self-contained human-the embracer-is seen by its creators as the panacea of humanity. Alternately repelled and enticed by the new order, Harris is drawn into the maelstrom. He eventually becomes a leading advocate. But then he must confront a beautiful young woman who aims to sabotage the mighty CityTech...

Embrace "The Embracer" December 16, 2003 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- = Embrace "The Embracer" Reviewer: A reader from New York, NY United States Gary Wolf's "The Embracer" is a first-rate fast-moving science fiction adventure story, which reverberated for me in today's politically correct world. The underlying forces shaping Harris' futuristic technology driven civilization - feminism run amoc, political correctness, gender mutations, immorality, the worship of false gods, self gratification, breakdown of ethics, concentrations of economic and political power - all have manifestations in the here and now. Once I opened the cover of The Embracer, it was hard to put the book down. Wolf's protagonist, like so many of us, finds himself in a dead end (computer) job, compromised by the system and as trapped by the overwhelming forces of his future world as so many of us feel trapped today. Harris' striving to break out turn Wolf's "The Embracer" into a first class adventure tale. It is well worth the plunge

The Embracer is an excellent read from first time author, Gary Wolf. A fast-paced adventure set in a futuristic world with twists and turns in a newly-forged culture where things aren't what they seem. Looking forward to more novels by Wolf.
