Misleading marketing, disappointing book October 19, 1998 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
_Furthur_ is being marketed, and furiously so, as a novel of interest to Deadheads. From the cover's "skull and roses" and "psychedelic bus" designs and thrice-repeated phrase "Deadhead Virus", one is led to believe that this is a book about and for Deadheads. I read _Furthur_ from cover to cover, hoping that it would eventually fulfill this promise. Sadly, it did not. Even so, I would have been satisfied if it had at least been well-written and coherent...again, I was disappointed. The story is third-rate at best and alarmingly racist; the author's style begs for a careful spelling and grammar edit. And, worst of all, after being so aggressively marketed as featuring "leftover deadheads who follow the music from holo-concert to holo-concert" (back cover blurb), the book only marginally mentions the Dead and glosses completely over the characters of most of the Deadheads; "holo-concerts" are briefly mentioned twice and then forgotten. I urge Deadheads to avoid this book, as despite its marketing, it has very little of interest to either Deadheads or those who appreciate well-written fiction.
It is refreshing to read fiction involving deadheads October 13, 1998 1 out of 3 found this review helpful
At first glance, I saw from the cover and synopsis of Furthur that it was going to be something different. While I've been a fan of The Grateful Dead for years(as well as other groups)I was happy to see someone attempt fiction about a well known group. There are many books about popular bands on the market that deal with their lives and tribulations, Furthur captures the spirit of the fans that made the band so popular. This book is fun reading for everyone, but be aware, it deals with mature subjects that are not to far off in the future. I recommend it highly, if you like science fiction.
If you are a Deadhead, don't waste your time reading this. September 11, 1998 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
Originally offered as "Furthur: The Deadhead Virus", this novel was marketed to unsuspecting Deadheads when it has absolutely nothing to do with the Grateful Dead or Deadheads. In addition, it is a very poorly written story throughout with heavy racial overtones. Don't waste your time or money here.
